This work describes our effort to enable the deployment of virtualized Radio Access Networks (vRANs) using the OpenAirInterface 5G software stack on top of a computer architecture based on an Arm processor and a Graphical Processing Unit (GPU). We enhanced the software stack to support this system and leverage its capabilities. We implemented a deployment of several end-to-end vRANs in order to challenge the system with our enhanced stack. We share our observations on this setup, its performance and the behaviors we faced. We discuss the limitations of the software stack and how they can be addressed but also consider how alternative implementations could be used to achieve better results.
